Dr Paul Toyne

Sustainability Practice Leader, Grimshaw & London Sustainable Development Commissioner

Dr Paul Toyne leads the global architecture and urban design practice Grimshaw on sustainability, overseeing their goals of net zero carbon ready designs by 2025 and truly social and environmental regenerative designs by 2030. With a diverse background as an environmental campaigner, conservationist and sustainable built environment specialist he has held Group Sustainability and Environment Director roles at WSP and Balfour Beatty, and Group Head of Environment and Sustainability at Bovis Lendlease. 

Paul’s experience covers all elements of the built environment, from flagship buildings/developments to infrastructure. Paul is a London Sustainable Development Commissioner appointed by the Mayor Boris Johnson in 2010. He is a member of the UK’s Green Construction Board’s infrastructure working group. Paul has a PhD from Imperial College, and is a Fellow at IEMA.

In this keynote, Paul will describe the challenge of our climate emergency and how the built environment contributes. It will outline the key components of net zero carbon and discuss decarbonization pathways. The keynote will conclude with examples of net zero carbon design and construction, and tips for how to set up projects for net zero carbon success.
